General,

Personal view on VMware’s partnership with AWS

Last week, the big announcement in the news was VMware’s partnership with Amazon (AWS). VMware will run its virtualisation layer on top of AWS bare-metal service offering. Who would have thought?

That was a logical step for VMware as it did not have a competitive cloud offering. If you can not beat them then join them approach made sense!

In my opinion, organisations are moving to the public cloud for scalability, agility, and OPEX model. VMware products do not offer any of those. Competing with public clouds will not play well for VMware.

To get the full value of the cloud, organisations need to elevate their applications from IaaS to PaaS to access the native cloud services. That would not be possible with VMware running on AWS IaaS.

Hypervisors are becoming a commodity and real value will be in other growing cloud services that VMware’s latest offering will not provide.

I wonder how long before VMware partners with its archenemy, Microsoft?

My bet will be in the not so distant future!

Thank you for reading.

Nick
