Adobe and the Cloud

Earlier this week, an outage at Adobe’s Creative Cloud services left many designers unable to do any work for almost a whole day! A year ago Adobe made the decision to force its customers to subscribe to its cloud service and removed the choice of packaged software or download digital copies. Many have been skeptical of the cloud and their worst fears have materialized.

I know this does not sound like much in comparison to say the damage caused by World War II but still it is enough to make people get a rash hearing the word cloud. Adobe’s response during the crises was to tell its customers to pull broadband plug from their machines which will trick them into thinking you are travelling on a plane or designing while hiking in the Amazon with no internet access! This would give you a 30 days grace period to use the software “locally”. Of course there is one minor detaile that was not mentioned by Adobe, which is if you have used that 30 days grace period already in the past then this little trick will not work!

This bring the controversial topic to surface again, is the cloud ready to host mission critical applications? The answer by many organizations that have lost a full day’s work due to this outage is a clear NO! And I am inclined to agree.

Of course you can host solitaire in the cloud but be prepared to deal with angry users in case of an outage!

Thank you for reading.

Nick
